LEGO 9V Light brick (via RCX)
Confirmed. A lamp brick on an RCX output port, blinked in the VLL timing, commands a Micro Scout. Every part in the path is LEGO, with no electronics added — the period-correct route.
rcxvll.nqh (pbrick) is how it is done — NQC macros toggling the output, a 400 ms preamble, 20 ms units, the whole code set. It costs an RCX and a tower to drive the RCX, on top of the lamp brick itself.
